Trapiche Rubies

About Trapiche Rubies
Trapiche Rubies consist of six ruby sections that are delineated by “arms” resulting in a fixed six-rayed “star”. Trapiche is the Spanish word for a spoked wheel used to grind sugar cane which bears a striking resemblance to the pattern in these rubies. It is pronounced trah-pee-chee with the accent on the second syllable.
Trapiche rubies are different from Star Rubies
In Star Rubies, the six-ray star glides along the surface of the stone when the star ruby is moved. Unlike Star Rubies, in Trapiche Rubies, the six-ray “star” is fixed and does not move.
Sources of Trapiche Rubies
Most trapiche rubies are known to come from the Mong Hsu region of Burma and from West Africa.
Trapiche Rubies with Asterism
Some trapiche rubies also display asterism (the star effect as seen in star rubies). These formations are very rare and hence command a high price.
